The Marigot kiosk square was taken by storm this Saturday, March 23 in the evening for the free open-air screening of the film “Chokehold shot entirely on the territory of Saint-Martin.

The Saint-Martin population will have come in large numbers to attend the screening organized by the Collectivity of Saint-Martin and CaribCiné Prod. If the feature film directed by Joel Ayuk and produced by Cani TV deals with the sensitive subject of violence against women, the public came with friends, family, with children, to be entertained but also to open dialogue on this theme which still has too many victims on a daily basis. With a meeting given at 19 p.m. on the Marigot kiosk square on which a gigantic giant inflatable screen was enthroned for an open-air projection worthy of the name with French subtitles, the film only started one day. shortly before 20 p.m., in front of a curious and impatient audience. The organizers had even planned a popcorn, hot dog and drinks stand for an optimal cinematic experience. Before the start of “Chokehold”, director Joel Ayuk took the floor to thank the audience present and reminded the importance of talking about violence against women. Filmed entirely in Saint-Martin and Sint Maarten, “Chokehold” tells the touching story of a police officer caught up in the demons of the past who fights to preserve his family, with a subtlety and artistic intelligence specific to Joel Ayuk. As captivating for children as for adults, “Chokehold” offers magnificent shots of many districts of the island, Nettlé Bay, Orient Bay, Sandy Ground, Anse Marcel, Philipsburg, Simpson Bay, the feature film speaks without taboo about domestic violence while paying tribute to the beauty of our island. During the screening, many spectators reacted spontaneously to certain scenes, showing their disapproval, anger or solidarity with the different characters.

During this screening, and this is what makes the 7th art so beautiful, the public became an additional actor in this poignant story. Despite some technical problems and complexities in the scenario, “Chokehold” won over the public in Saint-Martin, confirming its success during the preview at the Carribean Cinemas in Sint Maarten at the end of 2023 and through the awards won abroad . Between a promotional film for the island of Saint-Martin and a moving story, Joel Ayuk brilliantly succeeds in offering a unique, original and educational cinematographic work. By choosing to expose a reality and confront divergent opinions on domestic violence, the director pushes the viewer to question themselves and position themselves well beyond entertainment. The cinema evening closed in the presence of the director and certain actors who were able to interact with the public at the end of this remarkable screening, in more than one way. _VX

Chokehold: what the public said...

Takeesha, 15 years old: “It’s a very beautiful film, but it’s hard. There are scenes that are violent and made me cry but I want to tell all my friends to see it because it's important, there are a lot of people who never talk about that even though it exists, I know it. »

Jérôme, 7 years old: “It scared me, with the music going loud when the man is angry and hits the mother. Why does the gentleman do this? My dad doesn't get angry like that, he's nice to my mom. My mom always tells me that you shouldn't hit, if you're upset, you have to say why you're upset, then it gets better. »

Louise, 34 years old: “I came to this screening with friends. I had heard a lot about this film but I was a little reluctant to see it because I am a survivor of domestic violence. But I'm glad I came, this film should be shown in schools to raise awareness of the issue among young people, both girls and boys. »

Alain, 56 years old: “This film is very strong. I came with my daughter and my sister and I have to say that it's not easy to watch because it feels like it's happening for real. The images of the island are very beautiful, and we recognize the neighborhoods well but the history is hard. It makes you think, like when the lady who is beaten by her husband in the film says 'I'm someone's daughter too.' »
