2nd wave of covid-19: how many tests are performed on average, positive cases revealed? (1/2)

0

For nearly a month, the number of confirmed cases of covid-19 has increased sharply on the island, on both sides. Many people justify this increase by an increase in the number of tests: we test more, so we find more positive cases.

We wanted to assess this observation by comparing the data from the first wave and the second wave on August 21.

We estimated the end of the first wave in mid-May, during the first stage of partly French deconfinement, and the start of the second wave from mid-July when the positive cases started to increase.

As a reminder, 2 PCR tests have been carried out to date in part French and 632 in part Dutch since the start of the crisis on the island and respectively 1 and 417 cumulative confirmed cases.

First wave from March 17 to May 14: French part

The testing policy changed in part in France during deconfinement. From May 11, tests were also carried out on people who had been in contact with confirmed positive cases, until then these people were under surveillance and in quarantine. At the beginning of May, a first free and mobile screening campaign was carried out for two weeks.

If we look by period, as of March 31, 87 tests have been carried out and 21 confirmed cases, or 0,24 confirmed cases for 1 test. As of April 21, three weeks later, 73 additional tests have been carried out and 17 new cases revealed, or 0,23 confirmed cases for 1 test. As of May 14, three weeks later, 250 additional tests have been carried out and 1 case revealed.

On May 14, either at the end of the first wave or two months after the appearance of the first case, 410 tests were carried out and 39 cases confirmed, for a positivity rate of 9,51% (0,09 positive cases for one test). The average of tests was 51,25 per week.

First wave from March 17 to May 14: Dutch part

Partly Dutch, as of March 31, 16 cases had been confirmed out of the 58 tests carried out. Three weeks later, 55 new cases were revealed during the 200 additional tests, or 0,27 cases for one test. As of May 14, 414 tests have been carried out since mid-March and a total of 77 cumulative cases (+ 6 in 3 weeks).

At the end of the first wave or two months after the appearance of the first case, 414 tests were carried out and 77 confirmed cases, ie a positivity rate of 18,9% (0,18 positive cases for 1 test). The test average was 51,75 tests per week.
