Armed robberies: the gendarmerie carried out 21 arrests, including 5 in cooperation with the Dutch police

Faced with the resurgence of armed robberies affecting both businesses and individuals, an investigation group dedicated to this issue was set up within the Compagnie de Gendarmerie de Saint-Martin / Saint-Barthélemy on March 22. . 

With 4 permanent investigators from the detachment of the Saint-Martin research section, reinforced by 2 brigade judicial police officers and supported daily by the soldiers of the brigades as well as the various intervention elements, the gendarmerie and the public prosecutor's office of Basse Terre have, by their joint action, allowed the incapacitation of several teams.

Thus, 45 serious incidents including 26 incidents of VAMA  (Armed robbery) were resolved and resulted in 21 arrests, 5 of which were in cooperation with the police forces on the Dutch side. The penal response is up to the stakes.

In total, 5 indictments with pre-trial detention, 8 immediate appearances including 1 resulting in a sentence of 18 months imprisonment including 6 firm with committal warrant, 5 partly Dutch imprisonment including one followed by extradition and 4 summons before the judge.

"This strike force is doomed to last over time in order to curb this phenomenon which is damaging to the image of the island and its inhabitants", specifies the gendarmerie.

 

Useful advice ...

Faced with this scourge, the gendarmerie recalls that preventive measures exist such as:

- The establishment of video surveillance means with recording;

- The systematic call and as soon as possible to the gendarmerie;

- The preservation of the crime scene from any contamination;

- The vigilance of the owners vis-à-vis teams who would do scouting. In this case, it is advisable to inform the soldiers of the gendarmerie.
