Thanks to funding from R4CR (Resources for Community Resilience), the Sint Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC) has acquired 11 boats, which will increase the participation of young people in the practice of sailing.

The 11 boats were presented during a ceremony which welcomed all the parents and students of the sailing program. An important addition to the current fleet, as it will strongly contribute to the future development of the youth sailing programme. This meeting was also an opportunity to salute the success of the 4 months of free sailing lessons, offered to 2 primary schools, thus allowing 24 young people to learn about sailing.

Among the new boats are 6 RS Zests, which will replace the Laser Pico fleet, perfect boats for children, as well as adult beginners. Additionally, 5 Sail Qubes have been purchased to add to the Optimist fleet, aimed at young sailors and beginners.

With these new boats, the SMYC will be able to continue to develop its sailing program for primary schools, which will allow more young people in the area to learn about sailing and the maritime world.

This year, SMYC applied for additional funding from the Global Trust Fund, with the help of R4CR, in service of 3 main objectives; the expansion of the SMYC fleet, the addition of an additional school to the primary school sailing program, adding 12 more students.

This program offers free sailing lessons for one school year, with the introduction of the “Swim 2 Sail” program, which offers swimming lessons for children who need to know how to swim well before they can start sailing.
