A peaceful start to Saint-Martin

During the whole week, around 10.000 students will return to school. Next January, high school and college students will have to move to the school complex, located in La Savane. Update with Jean-Marie Jespere, the representative of the rector for the Northern Islands.

The school complex will finally open its doors in January 2016. How did you manage this situation?

We simply anticipated. The Collectivity wanted a start on September 1, but it was too early. Seeing the progress of the work, and the date of delivery of the site - scheduled for mid-October by the construction industry and the architects - we have planned a start on January 1st. There will therefore be a cohabitation of two establishments within the same site. At present, the re-entry of the school complex has already been made since the administration is in place. Frantz Gumbs has been appointed principal with his team at Concordia High School. They will be accommodated for four months in this establishment. There will be no increase in staff, just a migration from one establishment to another.

How did the teachers return to school?

Very good, in a friendly atmosphere. GRETA even organized a breakfast and all the teachers were present. This return to school is being calmly prepared. On this occasion, I explained to them that the transfer to the school complex will be done in the best conditions.

What are the new features of this school year?

There will be new programs for colleges. We have the school year to prepare for this reform of the colleges which will have an impact on the bilingual, European classes, but also on the teaching of Latin, and the history programs. For the moment, this is gradually being implemented. Each school head works with pedagogical discipline inspectors. We will have directives given by the rector who will come from elsewhere Wednesday to Saint-Martin. The priority project for me is bilingualism and the establishment of bilingual classes in education in both languages.
