The members of the Maternity Active association are mobilizing against sickle cell anemia. To raise awareness of this genetic disease, a grand march will take place next month.

Sickle cell anemia, which affects the hemoglobin in red blood cells, is a disease manifested in particular by anemia, painful attacks and increased susceptibility to infections, reports the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) . On the theme “Sickle cell anemia, let's face it together”, the association Active Maternity and its partners had the idea of organizing a hike on Sunday August 9 in order to address the characteristics of this very widespread disease in the world. The meeting is scheduled at 5:30 am in front of the hospital, in Concordia, for a departure from 6 am. “In France, 441 sickle cell children were born in 2013, representing a prevalence of one affected child for 1900 births. This figure makes it the most common genetic disease in France. However, this prevalence is much higher in the overseas departments (1/419) and in

Paris region (1/874) where the populations at risk are concentrated ”, underlines the institute. Last April, the Health Village devoted its third edition to this disease which affects "about 400 newborns each year, including 85 just for the Antilles", had explained at the time pediatrician Ricardo Casanova. Note that as part of World Sickle Cell Day, last month, 5.000 free screenings were offered to Guadeloupeans in analysis laboratories.

Tickets for the hike are on sale from association members (10 € $). A T-Shirt and breakfast will be offered. An information stand will be available to the public. To reserve your ticket, contact Alice on 06 90 58 43 23, M. Line on 06 90 44 48 35 or Carole 06 90 85 11 22.
