THEATER: “Beyond infinity”: time travel, between laughter and burlesque

0

The first performance of the show launching the 2022 season of the Théâtre de la Chapelle transported the public who came in droves to attend this one-of-a-kind comedy.

“Beyond the Infinite” is taken from a collection of short stories “Behind the Beyond” written in 1913 by Stephen Leacock, a Canadian writer and humorist who handles verbal contests with terrible accuracy. The writings were adapted for the theater and directed by Albina Matuzko, director of Ukrainian origin. The brilliant result was presented at the National Institute of Arts (NIA) in the Dutch part of the island several years ago. The director repeated the experience, this time in French, and with handpicked actors: Kamel Fenzi, Laurence Dromard, Raphaël Dorra, Tancrède Demont, Cor Sikkes, Stéphanie Carré, Martine Boudine and Cathy Carasso. Albina Matuzko reserving the role of the Italian maid whose facial expressions never ceased to make the assembly laugh. The play "Beyond Infinite" sets the scene in 1910 London to address timeless themes. Beyond the Infinite has this originality of integrating narrators directly into the play, directing the actors in period costume in the plot, their movements and the degree of expression of their interpretation, not hesitating to pause them to guide the spectators in the unfolding of this "play within a room"... or to make them interact directly, thus making the public a full actor in this ridiculous "false" comedy. The colorful characters complement each other over the course of the three acts which ramp up in terms of the irony and exaggeration of the game, for the great pleasure of all. To avoid revealing too much of the main plot, let's just say that "Beyond Infinity" paints a heightened portrait of life and love, betrayal and nostalgia of yesteryear. It is exhilarating to be able to attend a show as sharp as it is hilarious. _VX
