TESTIMONY: Final part of the Alex Richardson story

0

Born August 29, 1963, Alex Emmanuel Richardson played baseball with many friends in Sint Maarten before moving to Holland and joining the Haarlem Nichols team in 1983, the best at the time. The first two parts of the story having been published in our previous editions, here is the third and final part of his story.

During a match in 1987, I broke my leg. I was transferred to the Alkmaar medical center for surgery and I was immobilized at home for 6 weeks. I could feel the pain of my friend Mickey who couldn't do anything for me during this accident. He thought our baseball team had achieved this excellence in part because of my batting game. He was a big part of making my game better, because he believed in me like I believed in him. The local Dutch newspaper called me “Duizendpoot” (the centipede) in the baseball world, because I was able to do anything in terms of the game itself. Before the end of the 88 season, Franklin Richards and I decided to return to Sint Maarten. Mickey Huggins decided to go to Curaçao and stayed there. After my return, I continued to play baseball but it was not the same, I stopped after a few years.

I always looked up to all my friends as players and specially Boyco (Pedro) Rombley who for me was the cleanest player and he cared a lot about our game. Everything Boy did for me was just perfect and I loved watching him play. Even though I didn't see many Ernie Rombley and Clemmy Gibbs matches, most of the boys at SXM were all professionals in my heart and in their own way, they were the best players in the world. My story is also theirs.
