The Dutch side is on the road to recovery, Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs announced at a press conference yesterday. It has now been 11 days since St. Maarten has recorded a positive case of COVID-19, she said.

Currently there are no more patients at the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC). Two patients remain in the isolation center and one person is confined to her home. Ms Jacobs said that in 24 days, St. Maarten had recorded only one positive case. Since the outbreak of COVID -19, St. Maarten has reported 77 positive cases and 15 deaths.

This weekend is the last when the movement of people is not allowed.

Prime Minister Jacobs said that as St. Maarten enters its recovery phase, the most crucial part of the curve shifting process will begin.

The most important danger to be avoided is the resurgence of COVID-19. Ms Jacobs called on residents and the roughly 200 students who return to school on Monday to take their exams to maintain appropriate social distancing and ensure that necessary hygiene measures are observed, such as washing and disinfecting the hands.

Secretary General Miguel de Weever also announced that a decision has been made to allow boat owners to return to the island to remove their boats from the lagoons as the 2020 hurricane season begins on June 1. Mr. de Weever clarified that these people will have to go directly to their boat when leaving of the airport and leave the waters of St. Maarten within 24 hours.

Fire chief Clive Richardson has called on locals to prepare for the 2020 hurricane season which forecasts predict will be active.
