At the end of this month of October, a delegation from the Fondation de France (FDF) will return to Saint-Martin to take stock of 5 years of local collaboration with the leading philanthropy network in France.

After the series of extremely violent hurricanes that ravaged the West Indies in September 2017, including Irma, which considerably traumatized the population and the territory of Saint-Martin, the Fondation de France launched an appeal for generosity to come to the aid of the inhabitants. affected by this disaster. Many actions have been carried out to rebuild life, and 5 years later, the Fondation de France is still present to help associative actors to structure and perpetuate their initiatives. The 15,2 million euros raised during this emergency appeal for donations made it possible to support around a hundred actions for an amount of nearly 13 million euros, in particular in the French part of Saint-Martin, particularly affected, then in Dominica, Guadeloupe, Saint-Barthélemy, Cuba and Haiti. The priority areas of intervention of the FDF were the reconstruction of habitats, aid to families affected, economic recovery, support for education and culture as well as the preservation of the environment. During the health crisis in 2020, the Fondation de France reinforced its support for the most vulnerable people, with food and social aid and psychological support for populations. In 2022, the Fondation de France is still in the field and helps local associations to professionalize and sustain their actions with management tools, operating methods and even networking. It also pursues actions to prevent natural disasters, particularly in terms of education and recommendations concerning renovations and constructions. Since the West Indian territories are regularly confronted with natural disasters, the Solidarité Antilles committee has decided to support natural disaster prevention projects to enable the territories to adapt to the next hurricanes. The Fondation de France has also launched its own program entitled “Prevent and act in the face of disasters”. When it next comes on October 27, the FDF delegation, led by Karine Meaux, International Solidarity and Emergencies Manager, will report on the lessons learned from the actions carried out with its partners on the island of Saint-Martin since 2017. This meeting will also be an opportunity to share thoughts on the future and to hear the ambitions of local actors for the Caribbean area, particularly in the face of global warming. _VX
