Sixty children participate in the cleaning of Kim Sha Beach to welcome the Heineken Regatta!

More than sixty children participated on Saturday in cleaning Kim Sha Beach, host of the Heineken Regatta!

This cleaning is organized every year by the nautical club of Sint Maarten in order to sensitize the local youth to the pollution of the beaches and the oceans.

The event allows environmental responsibility of the youth through the cleaning of the beach.

The Nature Foundation of Sint Maarten started the day with a brief presentation of the impact of waste on the environment and more particularly the ocean. The children were extremely motivated and collected as much garbage as possible in the time available.

At the end of the cleaning, 400 kilos of garbage were collected. Prizes were awarded to the teams that collected the most garbage, the “2” team in the 6 to 12 year old age category collected 30 kilos of garbage while the “Lifesavers” team in the age category from 13 to 18 years old collected 90 kilos of waste.

The beach cleaning was followed by several fun activities organized by LAB Sports. The children were divided into several groups and took turns to play games and to compete on an obstacle course.

The prizes were awarded to those who had the best time. The "Savage" team won first place in the 6-12 years old category with 2 minutes and 42 seconds, while the "21" team in the 13-18 years old category won the round in three minutes and 55 seconds.

The winners of the beach cleaning won several prizes offered by the sponsors, at the end of the award ceremony, the children tasted pizza.

“It's amazing how motivated the kids are to contribute to the environment by helping to clean the beach. We are grateful for the support provided by the “St Maarten Nature Foundation”, “Meadowlands”, “Fiji Water”, “LAB Sports” and “Print & Sign” in making this event possible. We are already looking forward to next year's edition, ”said Anouk Van Loon, organizer of the beach clean-up.

Beach cleaning is part of the regatta artistic competition, the judges will examine all the works made from recycled materials and will select the winners on Sunday, February 2. This annual event aims to educate young people about the environmental challenges that Sint Maarten is facing.
