SOCIETY: Third LGBT+ demonstration in the streets of Marigot

As part of the World Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, initially celebrated on May 17, a march was organized by SAFE and the association AIDES under a threatening rainy sky which did nothing to slow down the enthusiasm of the participants.

With more than 120.000 people at the last Gay Pride in Brussels and the hundreds of thousands expected during the LGBT+ demonstrations which will take place in the major cities of France during June, the territory of Saint Martin has its number of activists, rightly and very proudly. After a first LGBT+ march three years ago under the impetus of the AIDES association, the spearhead of the movement, the second in 2021 brought together more than 70 people, young people, adults, high school students, parents, activists, supporters; all the attractions of a diversity that the beautiful LGBT+ community can represent. This year's theme “My Body, My Choice, My Rights” echoes the latest news related to the possible revocation of the right to abortion in the United States. Not to be confused with sexual orientation which is not a choice and which is very often a source of great suffering. Homophobia is the first cause of suicides among young people, as explained by Ivan Puig-Otero, co-founding member of SAFE: "homophobia is a reality that plagues the Caribbean, if mentalities have evolved in mainland France, there is still a huge awareness work to be done here in order to ease this shame which has no place to be. The procession of the third LGBT+ demonstration set off from Concordia, thus bringing together some thirty walkers around the same cause, to fight against prejudice, discrimination and violence faced by homosexuals but also transgender people and people with HIV. Claiming rights for some does not imply taking them away from others, the organizers of the march advocate a message around inclusion, visibility and the representation of diversity. A student from Lycée Robert Weinum recently won the citizenship prize with her poem “What would I do for the LGBT+ community if I were elected? ". Thanks to its partners, which are City Policy, CAF and the Collectivity, the SAFE structure, accompanied by the AIDES association and all the activists, will continue to move the borders so that all members of the LGBT+ community feel free to live without labels or judgement, and safe in a society which, "friendly island" obliges, has a duty to participate. _VX
