An inmate was found dead last Thursday in a cell in the Philipsburg detention center. Detectives are investigating this death.
On Thursday July 22, around 9:30 am, the police received information from the staff of the detention center that a detainee showed no signs of life. The man was discovered in his cell during a routine check-up. Rescue teams were called and attempted to revive the detainee, to no avail. After a doctor pronounced the man dead, the Sint Maarten prosecutor decided to open an investigation to determine the cause of death.
Police spokesman Ethelwoldus Josepha said the man was not being held on criminal charges but because he had mental health issues and had disturbed public order.
