SINT MAARTEN: Dutch health authorities note an increase in respiratory diseases

0

The Collective Prevention Services (CPS) of Sint Maarten have recently noted an increase in acute respiratory illnesses and remind the population that the flu season has arrived.

Doctors and pharmacists have reported an increase in respiratory illnesses, especially in children with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild cold-like symptoms.

Most people who get an RSV infection will have mild illness and recover within a week or two. RSV can make chronic health problems worse, and people with asthma can have asthma attacks following an RSV infection.

The following groups who are more likely to have serious complications if they become ill with RSV are infants and young children (under five years old) and older adults (especially those 65 years and over) and adults with chronic diseases (chronic heart or lung disease, weakened immune system).

The CPS continues to monitor health data and encourages the public to practice preventive measures such as proper hand washing (with soap and water for at least 20 seconds); cover your cough/sneeze with a tissue or your upper sleeve, not your hands; avoid close contact with sick people; Frequently clean frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, etc. in your home, school or workplace.

Handwashing often reduces the transmission of respiratory illnesses such as the flu, colds and COVID-19.

The CPS encourages the public to get vaccinated against influenza and COVID-19. _AF
