On Monday, September 14, police patrols had to intervene in two separate cases which involved several people suffering from mental disorders.

At the end of the morning, the police arrested a woman who had started a fast-paced chase after she had evaded traffic control. The dangerously driving driver refused to stop, and fled towards her home in the Cole Bay area. Once she arrived, the latter threatened the police with a gun.

The driver's daughter came out of the house to explain to law enforcement that her mother was suffering from a mental illness. The officers were able to disarm the woman before arresting her. After being treated by staff from the Mental Health Foundation, she was taken to the police station pending further investigation into the provenance of the gun.

That same day, at around 12:30 p.m., a patrol was dispatched to assist Mental Health Foundation staff who were dealing with a patient who refused to take his medication and who had become very aggressive.

When the police arrived on the scene, the patient threatened the officers who succeeded in overpowering him after strong resistance. He was arrested before being treated by psychiatric staff. Pending further investigation, he was remanded in custody. _AF
