ROAD SAFETY / Louis Mussington: "Let's change behavior on the road"!

0

President Louis Mussington wishes to send his deepest condolences to the families bereaved by road accidents. Too many young people, particularly on two-wheelers, have lost their lives in recent months on the roads of Saint-Martin.

“On Monday again, a young man died on the road while riding a motorcycle. Last week, it was a young woman, mother of a little girl, who lost her life.

If law enforcement and justice have a major role to play in terms of prevention and reinforcement of road checks leading to severe penalties for risky behavior, each road user must take charge and adopt a behavior responsible. Observance of good rules of conduct on public roads is essential.

The observation is clear today, road mortality in Saint-Martin is mainly due to risky behavior, especially among two-wheeler drivers. How to get used to the idea that young people can lose their lives like this, mourning families forever in pain. Every year in Saint-Martin, people under 24 are the main victims of road accidents.

Faced with this alarming observation, every citizen must become aware of the need to be careful on the road and to respect the rules of conduct: respect of the authorized speed, wearing of a protective helmet, wearing of seat belts, etc. Without this urgent and collective awareness, we will continue to mourn a child, a brother, a friend. It's intolerable.

I therefore appeal to all those who travel on our roads, young people in particular, be careful, drive quietly, do not take unnecessary risks, protect yourself and protect those who use public roads like you.

We must act quickly. This is why the Collectivity supports the road safety association SXM, which raises awareness among young drivers of the dangers of the road. But we must go further! Thus I will ask the delegated prefect Vincent BERTON and the commander of the gendarmerie of the Northern Islands Maxime WINTZER to set up sustained control operations and especially focused on the control of two-wheelers. Our territorial police are of course involved by committing themselves alongside the gendarmerie forces and on the axis of road prevention.

I also ask parents to make their children aware of wearing helmets and respecting good behavior on the road. The collective education that we must implement to reverse the trend is an action that we all need to take together. It is only in a collective and committed spirit that we will manage to change behaviors in the long term. Thank you all for your commitment to this cause which concerns our children.”
