The Russian space agency Roscosmos has revealed its intention to create an observatory on the Moon capable of tracking asteroids likely to threaten the Earth.
This lunar installation will receive information from several satellites orbiting the moon in order to locate space rocks (asteroids)
dangerous. In addition, this base will serve as a technological test bench that will allow studies of deep space to continue.
The permanent crew of the lunar installation will be made up of robots.
"There are plans to install equipment on this lunar base to study deep space and special telescopes to track asteroids
and comets that pose a danger of collision with Earth, "said the director of programs at Roscosmos.
“The location chosen for the base is the south pole of the moon. It has a relief and favorable conditions: enough light
for solar panels and constantly shaded craters with ice reserves for fuel and raw materials, ”he added.
