After a quiet Christmas weekend for the volunteer rescuers of the SNSM station of Saint-Martin, it is 8:38 a.m. on Monday December 26, when the SAMU relays to the CROSS-AG (Centre Régional Opérationnel de Surveillance et de Sauvetage des Antilles-Guyane ) a call from a person, alone on board, in the lagoon of Simpson Bay, with a suspected broken leg.
After a telephone interview with the victim, the CROSS AG and the SMCC (Maritime Medical Coordination Samu) engage the SNSM station of Saint-Martin, in order to carry out a medical evacuation.
At 9:15 a.m., 4 volunteer rescuers left their professional obligations to go and help the victim and set sail at 9:45 a.m. on the Rescue Star semi-rigid, the only nautical means that could pass under the closed Sandy-Ground bridge.
At 10 a.m., it moored to the applicant's boat. Immediately, 2 rescuers boarded to take care of the injured. After a complete medical check-up and the fitting of a splint, he was transferred to the Rescue Star in the direction of the Marina Royale where the firefighters were waiting for an evacuation to the Louis-Constant Fleming Hospital Center.
Back at the Fort Louis marina at 10:45 a.m., the crew meet at the station for a quick debriefing and repacking of the emergency bags before returning to their respective professional activities.
We will learn later that the victim suffered from a severe sprain with a fractured fibula. The Saint-Martin SNSM station wishes him a speedy recovery.
Best wishes to all for these end of year celebrations!
And be careful, on land and at sea! _AF
