On the initiative of the Vélo-Club de Grand-Case, Richard Virenque, one of the most popular cyclists in France in the 90-2000 years, went to Dauphin Telecom, partner of VCG.
Before the arrival of Santa Claus on Friday afternoon at Dauphin Telecom, Philippe Morel (Sales and Marketing Director) and all of his staff had the privilege of welcoming in their premises, the famous cyclist, Richard Virenque! The record holder of the polka dot jersey consecrating the best climber on the Tour de France was accompanied by René Arnell, emeritus leader of the VCG, as well as three young riders from the local club, Jayson Rousseau (Pro), Alban Clerc and Adelio Brooks, currently in sports-studies at CREPS in Guadeloupe.
"I am happy to have a good time in Saint-Martin," said Richard Virenque. “After thirty-five years spent on a bike, I decided to extend the summer under the Caribbean sun. In fact, I fell in love with this welcoming island where there are many nautical activities ”.
Now resident on the island for a few months of the year, Richard Virenque wishes to share his experience with young cyclists from Saint-Martin. And why not take a bike ride with them!
"For that, I will have to change gear! I did not imagine that the coasts of Saint-Martin were so steep, exclaims with humor the sympathetic and popular, Richard Virenque.
While waiting to resume his activities as a consultant on the Eurosport channel for the 2017 cycling season, Richard Virenque devotes himself to the pleasures of fishing, boating and scuba diving in Saint-Martin and in the neighboring islands. Good stay to him and his family! _AF
Richard Virenque in brief…
Richard Virenque was born on November 19, 1969 in Casablanca. Passionate about cycling since always, he became an amateur rider in the Vélo Club Hyérois team at only 13 years old. It was in 1991 that he went professional in the RMO team. The cyclist was quickly renowned for his qualities as a climber and participated in 1992 in his first Tour de France, during which he wore the yellow jersey for one day. Throughout his career, Richard Virenque won 7 stages of the prestigious competition, finished twice on the podium (3rd in 1996, 2nd in 1997), and held the record for 7 achievements in the polka dot jersey for the best climber. He never won the Tour. However, his qualities as a climber made him as popular as the greatest champions in the history of the Tour de France.
