Inter-school relay: More than just a race…

Last Wednesday, the students of the Aline Hanson School in Sandy-Ground met for an inter-school relay with the students of the MAC school in the Dutch part. Starting back to back from Terres Basses, each team ran respectively in French and in Dutch. 

This sporting event was more than just a race. It is the result of flawless educational work by teachers and the educational community. Carried by the legend of 1648 of the separation of the island of Saint-Martin, Children from CP to CM2 traveled between 450 and 900 m to reach the border of Bellevue. On arrival, they exchanged flags to anchor this unity that forms the island while highlighting all the values ​​that are conferred on it. Then, a welcome under a guard of honor awaited them for a triumphal entry to the MJC of Sandy-Ground. Master of ceremonies Marie-Thérèse Durand (translator) and Donovan Soudiagom (CM2B teacher) officially launched the festivities by congratulating and thanking all the guests, runners, participants, parents and representatives of the Dutch side. The Sandy-Ground choir, accompanied by Gilard Phillippe (GS Maternelle Jérôme Beaupère) and Dorothée Lempereur (CLIS) interpreted the anthem of the Friendly School followed by the hymn of Saint-Martin with their hands on their hearts. The coordinator of the project, Aline Dermaux was able to highlight the educational objectives of the project while evoking the strong links which unite the two parts of the island, specifying that school is the first vector of this cohesion, in particular through this project. Speeches followed one another with Mr. Boyer Dominique, Inspector of National Education of the Circonscription of the Northern Islands who congratulated the students and all those who made the success of this event while stressing the importance of the implementation place of project in schools to highlight the work of students.

The community of Saint-Martin spoke about the importance of the Aline Hanson School which bears the name of the president of the Collectivity while valuing the work that was carried out by the teaching team, the Minister of National Education and Sports of the Dutch side insisted on the cooperation that this project allows and hopes that it will continue for years to come. Finally, Mr. Bajazet, representative of the Prefect, welcomed this innovative initiative promoting cross-border cooperation between the French side and the Dutch side. A trophy was given to the captains of each team to salute their performance and the students of the Aline Hanson School offered the students of the MAC school a bracelet to seal this friendship which united them around a legendary relay. The MAC School offered a poster bringing together all this legend so that the story that has been rewritten in the present day, can be remembered and become a strong element of culture that the students will have to tell.
