Reconstruction of Saint-Martin: Member for the Northern Islands questions the government in the National Assembly

Claire Guion-Firmin, MP for Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin, yesterday challenged the Prime Minister, Edouard Philippe, during the questioning session with the government in the National Assembly. Extract.

"On March 12, the fifth interministerial committee for the reconstruction of our islands was held and I must tell you that the announcements made are disappointing and illusory to say the least.

500 million euros in aid, including: reconstruction of your own infrastructure, European aid, the moratorium on social charges and the loan, which will therefore be reimbursed.

President Macron, the members of your Government who went to Saint-Martin, and yourself, guaranteed an "exemplary and rapid reconstruction", how to carry out such a project with exceptional assistance which only amounts to 20 million euros?

However, it is clear that 6 months after the event:

Almost 1000 people remain homeless.

The schools operate in rotation mode, for lack of adequate reception structures.

The economy is struggling to restart and the big hotel chains are threatening to withdraw.

If Saint-Martin cannot get up very quickly, the social situation is likely to worsen.

Three months before the hurricane season, a new climatic event would be fatal.

Prime Minister, I cannot believe that your representative was able to declare that: "The French State wanted to favor a logic of national solidarity when it was held to nothing because of the status of the two islands "

Are we accountable for national solidarity? Victim of our autonomy when the island experienced the worst natural disaster in history?

Reassure us, Prime Minister, France will not abandon one of its territories and the next inter-ministerial meeting in June will guarantee us the exemplary and rapid reconstruction promised? "
