Press release of August 14, 2020. Prefecture of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin

Significant increase in the number of cases in Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy

“According to the last health bulletin dated August 12, the number of active cases is increased to 41 for Saint-Martin, and 8 for Saint-Barthélémy. The government of Sint Maarten has so far identified 144 active cases, including 7 hospitalized.

Need to slow down the spread of the virus by limiting movement

It is imperative that a collective effort be made to limit the spread of the virus as much as possible. This difficult effort today is however vital to preserve the 2020 tourist season. Thus, due to the increase in the number of cases and limited health capacities, the Prefecture and the ARS, after discussions with the Collectivity of Saint-Martin and in agreement with the Ministry of Overseas, decide to extend the restriction of movement between the two parts of the island until September 1st. Traffic between the French part and the Dutch part of the island of Saint-Martin is therefore strictly limited to the following overriding reasons: overriding family reason (death), emergency health reason (medical transport, ambulances ) and compelling professional motive. These reasons will be verified on the basis of the certificates already issued by the Prefecture. Medical requests can be made to the email address covid19pref@saint-barth-saint-martin.gouv.fr

Controls will therefore continue at the Bellevue roundabout and at Belleplaine by the staff of the border police and the National Gendarmerie. The border points of Cupecoy and Baie aux Huîtres will also remain blocked. By way of derogation, the transport of goods is also authorized to circulate between the two parts of the island. Authorized travelers from Juliana airport (coming from mainland France, the Schengen area or the list of safe countries) will be authorized to pass by presenting their plane ticket, their PCR test of less than 72 hours with a negative result and the sworn certificate issued by the company or present on the Prefecture website (http://www.saint-barth-saint-martin.gouv.fr/Actualites/LA-UNE/Actualites/Fin-de-l-etat-d-urgence-sanitaire-nouvelles-modalites-d-entree-a-Saint-Martin-partie-francaise-Saint-Barthelemy-a-partir-du-18-juillet-2020).

These restrictive measures are essential to limit the circulation of the virus and avoid reaching the capacity limits of our health system. They are put in place temporarily, the time to control the circulation of the virus on the island.

The health of the population is the only argument that should guide our decisions ”
