Port of Sint Maarten (PSG) and emergency services personnel successfully completed a maritime security drill held last Thursday, February 23, between 9:12 a.m. and XNUMX:XNUMX p.m., in the cargo section of the cruise and cargo facility to Dr. AC Wathey.

This exercise, which brought together more than 70 people, allowed the port and the emergency services to test their readiness in the event of an accident at the country's main port of entry for cruise ships and cargo ships. During a post-exercise debriefing, all roles and processes were assessed, and recommendations were made as needed to further strengthen the response of all stakeholders. This was the first large-scale exercise conducted by the Port of Sint Maarten in recent years. As a reminder, a large-scale maritime security exercise is required every 18 months in accordance with the requirements of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code). The ISPS Code entered into force on 1 July 2004 and applies to all ships over 500 gross tons operating in international traffic, as well as to the ports which provide a service to them.

“The primary objective of these exercises is to practice skills, test the equipment involved and validate the procedures relating to the scenario which was carried out last Thursday. The exercise allowed PSG personnel and members of the emergency services to work in sync to deal with an emergency.  It is essential that all stakeholders maintain a high level of preparation,” said PSG chief executive Alexander Gumbs. _AF
