Created in November 2002, the Soweto Gospel Choir quickly forged an international reputation chaining successes and rewards with in particular two Grammy Awards in the traditional music category for their albums "Blessed" and "African Spirit" in 2007 and 2008. Formed singers from church choirs in Soweto (South Western Township) and the surrounding area of this area where the anti-apartheid revolt was born, the troupe performs throughout the world in a repertoire combining gospel standards and typically southern songs. African people, and rose by its unifying song as an ambassador for South African freedom. With its unique blend of purely South African songs and international gospels songs, the Soweto Gospel Choir has captured the hearts of the world. A capella or accompanied by its four musicians, the young ensemble combines traditional rhythms with an energetic and expressive dance, interpreted in brightly colored costumes, the ensemble reproducing in a most authentic way the South African vocal art. In 15 years of existence, the Soweto Gospel Choir has performed in more than 40 countries, alone or alongside artists such as Bono (U2), Peter Gabriel, Annie Lenox, Diana Ross, Cat Stevens or Johnny Clegg and has won numerous awards.
