Tourism policy: debate on the actions of local authorities

The senators discussed last week in the Senate on the role and action of local authorities in tourism policy. Senator Guillaume Arnell outlined the challenges of this sector which “represents an important lever for growth and a decisive source of activity”. For our territory, the senator explained that “it mobilizes nearly 30% of the declared salaried workforce”. The competition from other islands, in particular Cuba, must be taken into account: this sector is progressing there because of “many competitive advantages”. According to Mr. Arnell, “the example of Saint-Martin is symptomatic of this phenomenon: the absence of port and airport infrastructures adapted to the reception of tourists limits the capacities of reception of visitors in the French part (…) for the benefit of the Dutch side ”._EH
