POLITICS / Sint Maarten: nothing is going well in Parliament

0

After less than a month in power, the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten, Luc Mercelina, invoked Article 59 to dissolve Parliament and call early elections.

This decision follows the loss of majority of the URSM – PFP – FP – NOW coalition which held the eight necessary seats out of the fifteen in Parliament, triggered by the withdrawal of support of MP Kevin Maingrette from the NOW party. In addition, the latter allied itself with the National Alliance (NA) and the United People's Party (UP), causing this shift in the majority. This new alliance was confirmed by Silveria Jacobs, leader of the NA during a press conference on May 20. As a result, Mercelina and her ministers took the decision the next day to dissolve Parliament, a decree ratified by Governor Ajamu Baly, and to organize early elections in the interest of the people of Sint Maarten. The inhabitants of the Dutch part will therefore return to the polls on July 18, 2024 to determine the future of the country. _VX
