Brown pelicans: A study to observe the smallest pelican of its species

0

The Sint Maarten Nature Foundation is conducting a study on the population of brown pelicans throughout Saint Martin. Since 2010, the Nature Foundation has observed these birds, and the results that will be collected will allow comparison with previous years.

The brown pelicans found in Saint-Martin are the smallest pelicans of their species, and only eat fish. In the immediate future, around 150 pelicans have been identified on certain parts of the Dutch part of Saint-Martin. The most important sites of the island were visited, in order to have an overview of the population, in particular at Little Bay Pond, Fort Amsterdam, Fresh Pond and Great Salt Pond. In order to ensure that the members of the Nature Foundation do not have the same pelicans, they spread out over all these areas the same morning, and started the census from a place where they could have an overview and a good overview of the population present.

Thanks to long-term studies, the Nature Foundation considers that it is possible to know the fluctuations of this population and also to identify the possible risks that pelicans may encounter locally. The breeding period will begin in the coming months and Nature Foundation thinks that the colony will be able to nest successfully. _RM
