HERITAGE: The historic site of Diamond Estate destroyed with excavator blows!

0

It is with infinite sadness and as much anger that the Minister of Public Housing, Environment, Land Use Planning and Infrastructure of Sint Maarten, Egbert Doran reacted after the odious destruction of the historic site of the “Diamond Estate” plantation illegally perpetrated on the night of Monday 23 to Tuesday 24 January by a construction machine.

This place steeped in history, located on the border between Cole Bay and Bellevue, is the subject each year, on July 1, of a commemorative ceremony "Emancipation Day", in tribute to the enslaved men, women and children who were freed from slavery in the Kingdom of the Netherlands on July 1, 1863.

This historic site has unfortunately disappeared from the local landscape after a criminal act committed by one or more inattentive people.

A real estate speculation could be at the origin of this attack on the history and the collective memory of the inhabitants of the two parts of the island.

The government of Sint Maarten, meeting yesterday, said that "everything will be done to bring to justice the perpetrators of this unspeakable act". _AF
