"Following the major climatic events suffered by our compatriots in the Antilles this year, the President of the National Assembly, François de Rugy, will travel to Saint-Martin, Saint-Barthélemy and Guadeloupe from Thursday 23 to Saturday 25 November inclusive, ”according to a press release.

François de Rugy, who was originally to go to the Antilles in September after the passage of Irma, had postponed his displacement after the passage of Hurricane Maria "so as not to hinder the reinforced mobilization of the means available on the spot for the protection of populations "

Information mission

The Assembly created this week a fact-finding mission on "the management of major climatic events in the coastal areas of France and Overseas". Proposed by François de Rugy, this mission, which has not yet started its work, will be composed of 29 members, 16 LREM, 5 LR, 2 MoDem, 2 Constructive, 2 New Left, 1 rebellious France, 1 communist.

After a controversy over the government's management of Hurricane Irma and the wish of members of all sides for a committee of inquiry, Emmanuel Macron declared himself "favorable" on September 12 to a parliamentary committee of inquiry for judge government action, "but at the right time".

What powers?

The work of the fact-finding missions includes hearings and possibly trips to France and abroad. Reports may give rise to a debate without a vote in plenary or conclude with the tabling of a bill, a bill, or the presentation of a decree.

Elected FN Sébastien Chenu, who had denounced "the scenes of violence and looting" after Irma, also filed a request for a commission of inquiry, doomed to failure because the FN has no group. If he had judged that "it would be better to avoid polemics immediately on these disasters", the President of the National Assembly declared at that time that he would find "completely normal" that a parliamentary commission of inquiry be requested, if a group requests it.

François de Rugy had wished that the questions of the “causes” of the natural disaster, of “well-given alerts (…)”, according to him, and of “anticipation for everything relating to relief and protection of people".
