In 2016, 2 residence permits were issued by the prefecture to foreign nationals, i.e. 611 less compared to 342, according to figures from the prefecture. For nearly 2015% of titles, this is a first request.

In addition, the State services noted a very strong increase in asylum seekers. 345 cases were processed compared to 45 the previous year. The prefecture explains this request by the political-economic crisis that Venezuela went through in 2016; Venezuelans representing more than 78% of asylum seekers in Saint Martin. The offices of the foreigners' service have adapted and devoted two afternoons a week to these files. In the French part, the legal foreign population is estimated at around 14, or around 000% of the census and official population. 40 people were naturalized in 91. (Source: www.soualigapost.com)
