WEATHER: A tropical wave strengthens and threatens the West Indian arc

A tropical wave is approaching the West Indies but many uncertainties remain as to the intensity with which the climatic phenomenon will approach the northern half of the archipelago tomorrow.

If the intensity of the phenomenon which will approach the West Indian arc this Wednesday, July 29 remains to be determined, the services of Météo France envisaged yesterday a strengthening of the system. “It is very likely that it evolves into a tropical depression with a rapid movement towards the west and then west-north-west. This system is expected to strengthen as it moves towards the West Indian arc. At this stage, this system should remain of moderate intensity (tropical depression or moderate tropical storm) ”, explains Météo France. In the conditional, anything is possible. In this context, it is important to remain informed and attentive to the development of the situation. « Its current most likely trajectory is a crossing of the West Indian arc on Wednesday between Saint Lucia and Antigua with associated heavy rains and average winds below 80 km / h, the northward extension of which could go beyond Saint-Martin ", specifies Météo France.

Yellow vigilance scheduled for today

On the occasion of a press conference organized yesterday, the prefect of the Northern Islands Sylvie Feucher specified that a yellow vigilance could be issued during the day. The Prefecture of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin in consultation with the Collectivity of Saint-Martin does not exclude the use of cyclone shelters for populations exposed to rising water levels due to the heavy rainfall expected in the territory. A decision will be taken during the day with regard to the evolution of the weather forecast. The authorities invite the population to carefully follow the usual recommendations. To be well prepared, it is advisable to clean and secure the surroundings of the house by removing bulky items and anything that could become dangerous projectiles in strong winds.
