PRESS RELEASE FROM THE PREFECTURE

      • Maintaining orange vigilance “HEAVY RAIN – THUNDERSTORMS”

      • Closing of schools in Saint-Martin on Monday, November 7, 2022

In accordance with Météo France forecasts, the islands of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin have been affected by thunderstorms and heavy rains since Saturday, November 5. Over the past 24 hours, there have been precipitation levels of 131 mm in Marigot and 26 mm at the Gustavia weather station. At the end of the day and beginning of the night, heavy rainfall over a short period of time led in particular to a rise in the water level in certain areas of Saint-Martin.

If the afternoon rainfall turned out to be less than expected by Météo-France, the area of the northern Antilles around Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy is currently still marked by the presence of significant stormy phenomena. The risk of heavy precipitation, possibly of the same level as last night, remains high from the end of the day (17/18 p.m.) and during the next night. And if an improvement is forecast during the day on Monday, significant precipitation can also occur during the morning. Despite temporary lulls, the orange vigilance "heavy rain - thunderstorms" is therefore maintained.

As a result of the precipitation of the night of November 5 to 6 and possibly the bad weather of the night of November 6 to 7, and after an exchange with the Vice-Rector of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin and the representatives of the two Communities, The Prefect today issued an order closing schools in Saint-Martin on Monday, November 7. The closure of schools in Saint-Martin will allow the teams of the Collectivity to carry out the work identified around the schools in order to secure them. At the same time, an assessment of the impact of bad weather on the buildings will be carried out and these will be subject to the cleaning necessary to welcome the students in the best conditions.

Schools will therefore not welcome students to Saint-Martin on Monday, November 7. The start of the school year will therefore take place on Tuesday, November 8 at the usual hours for each of the establishments. Due to the lower level of precipitation on the island during the weekend, schools in Saint-Barthélemy will operate normally on Monday, November 7.

In the event of heavy rain overnight and due to the risk rising water levels in certain parts of the territory which would lead to road cuts, The Prefect advises against all travel that would not be necessary during heavy rainfall until a climatic improvement, the only way to allow water to be evacuated in the most impacted areas.

In parallel, the Prefect of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin asks everyone adopt the following preventive measures:

        • Find out before you start a trip and be very careful.

        • Avoid walks and hill hikes

        • If you live in a flood zone, secure your property that could be damaged and watch for rising water.

        • Si your home may be threatened by a landslide, leave it where are you getting ready to evacuate it quickly.

        • In the event of a storm: avoid using telephones and electrical appliances. Do not take shelter in a wooded area, near pylons or poles, or under an isolated tree
