MEMORY: Commemoration of National Harkis Day

0

The day of September 25 was instituted in recognition of the sacrifices made and the abuse suffered by the harkis, moghaznis and personnel of the various supplementary and assimilated formations because of their commitment to the service of France during the Algerian war, between 1954 and 1962.

A ceremony took place on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. in this setting, opposite the Community War Memorial, in the presence of the Secretary General, Sub-Prefect Fabien Sésé, the Vice-President Dominique Democrite-Louisy, the representative of the Knights of the National Order of Merit, Guillaume Arnell and members of the association of Veterans of Saint-Martin.

A little bit of history

In 1954, while Algerians joined the National Liberation Front (FLN) to fight for their country's independence, others chose France and joined the French army. The latter, for the majority of civilians armed by France, with the mission of ensuring the security of strategic points, villages or sometimes larger areas, but also of participating in military operations alongside the French army.

The end of the conflict resulted, for the black feet as for the former auxiliaries – those who were in the habit of commonly designating under the name of Harkis – by the tearing, the flight, the exile, or even the horror for those who remained in the country, deemed traitors to their country.

France has recognized its responsibility in the tragedy experienced by the harkis and their families and is committed to a policy of reparation and recognition. This notably requires an uncompromising examination of the past in all its aspects and an objective transmission of the history of all the entities that make up the national community. The ceremony of September 25 is the most solemn expression of this. _AF
