Chemo treatments will be performed in Saint-Martin in 2021

Today, people with cancer living in Saint-Martin and having to undergo chemotherapy treatment must go to Guadeloupe, a very restrictive process for patients and which generates a lot of fatigue.

The practice of chemotherapy cannot be done at the Louis-Constant Fleming hospital for a technical reason: there is no place to manufacture the doses of drugs to be administered; the pockets must in fact be prepared in an isolated place, designed according to very specific standards and authorized by the autonomy health commission of Guadeloupe.

For several years, a medical team from the establishment, including a pharmacy doctor, has been working to remedy this lack and will see its outcome next year.

At the end of 2019, the Louis-Constant Fleming hospital file was presented and validated by the famous commission, which made it possible to initiate the following process this year, that of the construction of the unit.

"The building is under construction, the shell is practically finished", indicates Doctor Charles Vangeederhuysen, president of the medical commission of the establishment. He also announces that it will be operational during the second half of 2021. Whatever the cancer, all patients will be able to receive treatment in Saint-Martin.

At the staff level, the Saint-Martin hospital already employs an oncologist and two nurses trained in the preparation and administration of this type of treatment. “The possibility of doing chemotherapy locally is part of the 2021-2015 medical care project of the Louis-Constant Fleming establishment,” underlines Dr. Vangeederhuysen.
