Sargassum is back

0

For a fortnight, strandings of sargassum have intensified on the beaches of Saint-Martin. "The season is starting again, there are all along the beach on almost a meter in height" reports Brigadier Ismaël from Coralita beach. In Saint-Martin since January 2016, the green brigade made up of around twenty members, employed by the Center Symphorien d'Insertion, crosses the beaches of Cul de Sac, Coralita and Galion every day. Armed with forks, gloves, boots and wheelbarrows, they collect the sargassum stranded on the coast and make piles to dry it. The Collectivity then takes care of transporting these heaps to the recycling center. They continue to dry in the sun before being added to other green waste and then transformed into compost which is then sold all over the island.
