The Compagnons Bâtisseurs will begin the second phase of their work

The Building Companions are preparing to begin the second phase of their work in Saint-Martin. The association, which works in particular for the improvement of housing, began its mission on the island last January, funded by the Fondation de France. The objective is to put the victims of Irma out of the air and out of the water.

The second phase is supported by an exceptional budget of 3 million euros. Much more substantial resources which should make it possible to rehabilitate the homes of 5 families within a year. The workforce will be considerably strengthened and will include six teams. Tuesday August 120, took place the first attribution commission. Ten Sandy Ground beneficiaries were thus selected. The first sites are scheduled to be installed between September 21 and September 10. The project must continue at the rate of one commission per month, each time defining the number of beneficiaries.

The criteria are quite precise: the roof area to be repaired must not exceed 110 m2. The masonry must be in good condition, because this is not where the Companions will intervene. The house must normally be registered on the cadastre, it must not be a condominium. The beneficiaries are uninsured people who are in a situation of precariousness or even very precariousness. Priority families are single parents, or those that include an elderly person, children, or a disabled person. They are encouraged to participate, either by helping with the work, or financially.

Beyond the material difficulties (lead times, search for a storage location and utility vehicles, etc.), Companion Builders especially have difficulty recruiting locally. They are looking for twelve people to complete their teams. Not only multitasking workers (OP1) but also young people in civic service. "If they last the first six months, they will be hired as workers for the next six months and will have the opportunity, if they wish, to enter the cycle of the Companions of duty, with whom we have bridges, in order to to choose the path of excellence ”suggests Thierry Guenand.
