Legion of honor: 11 decorated overseas sailors

“Founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the Legion of Honor is the highest of French national distinctions”, according to the Grand Chancellery. The civilian promotion of January 1, 2016 has 616 people, including 505 knights, 82 officers, 22 commanders, 5 grand officers and 2 grandcross. This year, the New Year's promotion distinguished 11 ultramarines from Martinique, Guadeloupe, Reunion, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Guyana and Mayotte. This promotion represents the last of three civilian promotions of 2015 after those of Easter and July 14.
