Light earthquake north of Saint-Martin

A weak earthquake of magnitude 2,8 on the Richter scale was felt last Saturday on the territory at 4:46 a.m., according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Guadeloupe (OVSG-IPGP). The epicenter was located 11 km north of Saint-Martin and 21 km deep. This is the second this month: at the beginning of February, an earthquake of magnitude 3,9 was recorded in Saint-Martin, 18 km north of the territory. Earthquakes are common in the region. “The island arc of the Lesser Antilles results from the plunge of the America plate under the Caribbean plate. This active subduction has a convergence speed of 2 cm / year (…) some earthquakes are directly linked to the sliding processes between the two plates ”, indicates the institution. _EH
