President Daniel Gibbs received the Saint-Martin fishermen's union on Wednesday November 24, represented by Vanion Hodge.

As a reminder, decree n ° 2016-781 of 10 June 2016 recoding the provisions relating to overseas of the rural and maritime fishing code allows, in its regulatory part, to provide a regulatory framework for the creation of a territorial committee for fisheries and marine farming in Saint-Martin, in particular by giving the CCISM the possibility of hosting and organizing this structure. The union of fishermen and aquacultures of Saint-Martin is therefore committed to forming this fisheries committee but is encountering obstacles in the execution of its approach that Vanion Hodge came to explain to the President of the Collectivity in order to benefit from his support. Saint-Martin currently has around twenty professional fishermen, a figure that has been rising steadily in recent years.

In order to facilitate the functioning of the future territorial fisheries committee, an agreement must be signed with the CCISM, for the purposes of hosting and organizing the committee which will be called upon to sit on numerous bodies such as the Nature Reserve, the Council. of the Collective or even the CMUBA, which deal with the management of fishery resources and the preservation of natural resources.

President Gibbs recalled the commitment of the Collectivity which recently requested the CCISM to submit an application when the time comes, for the constitution of a Local Action Group for Fisheries and Aquaculture (GALPA), in the framework of the new European FEAMPA 2021/2027 programming. This structure will mainly serve as technical and financial support for the functioning of the territorial fisheries committee. Regarding national representation, Mr. Vanion HODGE already has a seat on the National Fisheries Committee. Nevertheless, Saint-Martin is awaiting to know if legally the fisheries committee of Saint-Martin will be duly represented there.

The President reiterated his support for the union, he will send a letter to the Minister of the Sea, Annick Girardin, to support the approach of the fishermen.

Daniel Gibbs also recalled that the Community was also working on the creation of a slipway. This equipment is budgeted and will be used by all users of the sea: fishermen, inter-islet smugglers, rescue services, Nature Reserve. The Collectivity has moreover obtained the agreement in principle of the UT DEAL of Saint-Martin for the realization of this project.
