Despite the so-called reserve period, the new delegate prefect of Saint-Martin wished to meet the local media on Wednesday in order to introduce himself. Vincent Berton, 56, took up his new post on Monday. "I'm very, very happy with this assignment," he said.

“I am happy to go back overseas because serving the State in these territories takes on a greater meaning than in mainland France,” admits Vincent Berton, who was already posted in Guyana between 2006 and 2008. He says he is aware that this mission will still be different due to the uniqueness of the island. “I appreciate the challenges and the stakes because of the particular institutional context, the role of the State is different there than in another territory”, he declares.

The new prefect defines himself as "a man on the ground". "I need to soak up the local reality," he says. He also plans to meet the newly elected officials, socio-professionals, the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten next week. “There are complex, atypical files to manage and I want to do it in partnership. I want to work on the basis of constructive and respectful exchanges,” he adds.

Among the files that await him, "the continuation of the management of the health crisis, the organization of the presidential election then the legislative elections locally, regional planning (PADSM), the implementation of preventive measures in the framework of the hurricane season, the economic recovery, public safety, etc. The new prefect wants to "fully assume the sovereign missions". _Soualiga.post.com
