The cry of alarm from the students of the Collège de Quartier d'Orléans: “Say NO to single-use plastic”!

The students of the college of Quartier d'Orléans have been involved for almost 2 years now in their school and district in order to fight against plastic pollution. Each week, during their “Euro English” course, they set up various actions aimed at changing their daily landscape as well as mentalities.

In order to carry out their campaign, they first created a logo naming them "The SXM Plastic Patrol".

Last year, they took part in an academic artistic competition for which they produced works of art raising awareness of plastic pollution in the oceans. Today, they want to go further, with concrete and regular actions.

They started by organizing their first “plastic cleaning” at Christmas, around the Quartier college and their places of residence. The next cleaning will take place on March 8 during the February holidays.

Then, after discovering that single-use plastic should have been removed from stores on the island since January 1, 2016, they created posters intended for stores and aimed at limiting or even banning the use of plastic bags in checkout.

"It is a shame that we are in 2019 and that this article of law is still not respected in stores," said a student in the class. The “SXM Plastic Patrol” therefore decided to draft an online petition asking the Collectivity of Saint-Martin to enforce this article of law: (http://chng.it/9pjhcjCjKh)

Their petition has already collected more than 200 signatures and they do not intend to stop there. They will go next week to do an intervention at the Jean Anselme primary school (QO) in order to sensitize the young generations to the dangers of plastic for our environment. They plan to continue their campaign with their teacher, Madame Arnaud, until the end of the year by intervening in other schools but also in high school.

"Single-use plastic is a real scourge for our island, both for tourism and for our health", they affirm, while stressing the efforts of a few remarkable stores and restaurants that have already changed their habits: Casa HBS (QO ) uses recyclable bags and the Lagoonies and Buccaneer restaurants have already replaced their plastic straws with recyclable straws.

By the end of the school year, students aim to propose the installation of water filters in their college to significantly reduce plastic waste in their school. “We could organize a fundraiser to create bottles with the image of the college and offer them at the start of the sixth grade. But everyone will also have to play their role in Saint-Martin and become aware of the importance of limiting their plastic consumption ”.
