Alcohol is wreaking havoc, and remains one of the leading causes of hospitalization in France, according to a recent study. Hospitalizations cost 2,64 billion euros in 2012. Overseas, an island is particularly affected by this phenomenon.

Before leading to death - nearly 50.000 people each year - alcohol leads to hospital huts. The study, published last week in the weekly epidemiological bulletin (BEH) of the Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS), indicates that its consumption remains one of the leading causes of hospitalization in France, ahead of diabetes. In the Overseas Territories, Reunion has a rate greater than double the national average for acute poisoning and hospitalizations for alcohol dependence. In Saint-Martin, alcohol is the main cause of consultation at the addictology support and prevention care center (CSAPA) in the North Islands. Nathalie Clément, director of the association Sida / Les Liaisons Dangereuses, which oversees the center, explains that “the users themselves are the initiators of their request in most cases. (…) The purpose of our follow-up is to support the person in reducing the risks associated with this consumption on the route he chooses: social, medical, psychological support, reduction in consumption, outpatient treatment or cure ”. Alcohol is the second leading cause of preventable death, after tobacco.
