Back to school date postponed to a later date

Due to the major cyclonic phenomenon IRMA, which should impact the Northern Islands from Tuesday 5 September, it was decided, in conjunction with the prefect of the Guadeloupe region, the rector of the academy, and the presidents of the communities, to shift the back to school date in Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin.

This decision, taken in advance, aims to allow the population to prepare as best as possible for the arrival of the cyclonic phenomenon, and to put the schools in safety or in “cyclonic shelters” configuration.

School heads, administrative and technical staff from the State and communities must be present to ensure that schools are made safe.

The start of the school year will be defined according to the evolution of the cyclonic phenomenon, and its consequences.

The Prefecture recalls that everyone must be responsible for their own security.

Before a cyclone:

- clean the surroundings of the houses, to prevent any object from flying away when the cyclone passes;

- put together an emergency kit (water, batteries, food, important papers);

- remain attentive to messages disseminated in the media.

Cyclone IRMA is the subject of all the attention of the State services. They are in permanent contact with Météo France. The prefecture will inform the population of the safety instructions to follow according to the meteorological evolution on our islands.

For official information from the prefecture, consult the Facebook account "Préfecture de Saint-Barthélemy et Saint-Martin" and the official community websites. _AF
