Caricom explains why the use of marijuana in the Caribbean should be decriminalized

0

A report on the challenges of decriminalizing marijuana was issued last summer by a commission from the Caribbean community (Caricom).

The idea for this reflection started from the following observation: more than 1 people are or have been imprisoned throughout the Caribbean for having consumed cannabis and when they were released from prison they continued to use, despite their conviction. In other words, the law and prison have no impact. "The majority of the Caribbean population believe that the laws in this area are ineffective, discriminatory and deeply unfair," report members of the commission. They cite polls showing that today there is "overwhelming support for law reform." In this part of the world, the use of marijuana represents "a way of life", a culture. The Caricom commission points out that many consider that the ban on consumption and cultivation "prevents the region from taking advantage of the economic opportunities offered by the cannabis industry and medical research" and hinders "access. to drugs that can treat more efficiently and at a lower cost than traditional pharmaceutical products ”.

However, the committee indicates that minors and motorists should not use marijuana. (more details on www.soualigapost.com)
