JUSTICE: Six months in prison required for lawyer accused of corruption

0

The Sint Maarten prosecutor requested a six-month prison sentence for a lawyer from the Dutch side (BB) for bribery and inducing an immigration employee to abuse his position. His name appeared in WhatsApp conversations in the context of the Ostrich case. According to the messages, he gave bribes to two immigration officers (JM and KB) so that they allow the entry into the territory of undocumented people working for an insurance company having storefront.

"The evidence against BB was found by chance when the phone of another suspect was seized. Bribery of immigration officials severely damages confidence in the government. In addition, public policies on illegal residence and entry have been seriously compromised. On a small island like Saint Martin with many inbound and outbound visitors, the importance of an effective border control system cannot be sufficiently emphasized, ”said the prosecutor. The judgment will be rendered on May 30.
