The Soualiga Youth association organizes its annual prom ball on Friday July 27 at the Pavilion of the Marina (Cole Bay). The opportunity for high school students from the school district and the LPO to get together one last time, during an alcohol-free evening, before everyone leaves to continue their studies.

"We created this event in 2005 because there was already a ball in the Dutch part but it was intended for pupils schooled in the establishments of Sint Maarten", explains Jean-Marc Gervais, the president of the association.

“The first Saint-Martin ball brought together 75 people, members of the association included. But little by little the event has grown ”he remembers.

Moreover, this year, 150 young people have already reserved their places. Several activities are planned for the first part of this “evening of dreams”, which should be attended by Valérie Damaseau, the first vice-president, and the territorial advisor Jean-Sébastien Hamlet: election of the king and the queen of the evening, of the prince and princess, the best couple, the best evening dress, but also dance and musical performances.

Since 2015 Orange has been the official partner of the evening, which, according to the president of the association, allows "not only to keep the ball rolling but also to increase the level" since the operator is responsible for part of the financing of the event (decoration, sound system, etc.) and offers prizes to reward the winners of the ball king and queen competition (one smartphone each). "Once the results have been given, the ball is open from midnight to about two in the morning," says Jean-Marc Gervais, who may be considering opening the ball to college students in the coming years.
