The fire that started at the Pond Island landfill on Sunday evening was not yet under control Tuesday, February 6.

The Prime Minister and members of the Council of Ministers therefore decided to leave the Philipsburg schools and the University of St. Maarten closed for the second consecutive day.

Residents and those gathered in emergency accommodation at Little League Bay and the Carnival Village were evacuated in the morning. Authorities advised residents of Pond Island to evacuate their home and take refuge with a friend or family. The public is invited to wear a mask and avoid inhalation of smoke generated by the fire. Public administrations also remained closed on Tuesday 6 February.
