In Saint-Martin, consultations for gastroenteritis are increasing, according to the latest epidemiological bulletin from the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS).

"The weekly number of consultations is at the level of the maximum values expected in recent weeks," said the institute, which is closely monitoring the situation. Fatigue, loss of appetite, headache, acute diarrhea: the symptoms are not very pleasant. "Gastroenteritis is an infection of the digestive system caused mainly by a virus," says the National Institute for Prevention and Education for Health (Inpes).

A stubborn virus

It “survives a minimum of eight hours on inert surfaces and sometimes up to seven days. The disease lasts on average from 2 to 5 days, but we can remain contagious up to 3 days after recovery, ”underlines Inpes. Long hand washing is essential against germs.
