Disability: a week of mobilization in Saint-Martin

The Handicap Week will kick off on Sunday in Galisbay. Until March 13, various actions will be implemented in Saint-Martin to raise public awareness on the issue of disability.

This event is organized on the initiative of the associations Coralita-Sessad and Tournesol, in collaboration with their various partners. “There is always a lot of work to do. It is a daily struggle which is not easy. We do not intend to give up, ”said Bernice Brooks, President of Tournesol, who thanks all the volunteers for their support. In turn, the various specialized organizations listed their difficulties, during a press point which took place last week in Marigot. Everyone agrees that the lack of establishments in Saint-Martin to accommodate disabled people is a real problem. “Once the young people have finished ULIS classes, they find themselves once again isolated at home. We are fighting for structures, ”said Ms. Brooks. Rose Nicolas, the president of Coralita, specifies that these structures are created according to calls for projects. “At the level of the local health contract, the COM has brought out a project for structures. But it is the health agency that validates the funding, ”adds Didier Witczak of Tournesol. "There is a problem of political will," concludes Sessad director Fernando Semedo. We will return to the Disability Week program in our next edition.
