WAR IN UKRAINE: Daniel Gibbs sends a message of support to populations affected by this conflict

0

President Daniel Gibbs expresses his deepest concern about the current international situation, and in particular about the military attack carried out by Russia in Ukraine since February 24th.

History is tragic. And the images of destruction and desolation do not fail to challenge and move all Saint-Martinois who experienced the devastating passage of IRMA a little less than five years ago.

This conflict, which could be expected to last as announced by the President of the Republic, will not fail to have consequences on the Saint-Martin economy, particularly with regard to consumer prices. Particular attention will be paid to the evolution of fuel prices, and therefore to the prices of plane tickets, an essential point concerning a territory like ours living off tourism. The Collectivity, with the support of the necessary national solidarity, will therefore not fail to take, if necessary, the required economic and social measures.

In the immediate future, the Collectivity of Saint-Martin, territory of the French Republic and region of the European Union, naturally expresses its full support for the measures announced by the Government and by the Council of Ministers of the EU.

Bringing together a hundred nationalities, Saint-Martin, the Friendly Island, has always been a model of peaceful coexistence and respect for differences. This spirit of Concordia, which has been the basis of our plural identity since 1648, cannot be called into question by current events: on the contrary, it represents more than ever a model to follow, an ideal to achieve.

Expressing all his solidarity with the civilian populations affected by the conflict and in particular with the inhabitants of the city of Kiev, President Daniel GIBBS therefore hopes that a favorable outcome will be found as soon as possible in compliance with international law, synonymous with the stability of frontiers and the right of peoples to self-determination.

On the occasion of International Women's Rights Day (celebrated yesterday), we have a heartfelt thought for all the women and children who bear the full brunt of this conflict and have no choice but to leave their country to protect their life. We send them all our solidarity and salute their immense courage.
